The biggest film festival in Russia takes place in Sochi every year and is a showcase for the national movies. Over the past 27 years it has unveiled many names of talented directors, producers, actors and script writers. The movie is shown free of charge on the big screen in front of the local sight The Winter Theater.
After the fall of the Soviet Union the film financing was drastically reduced; that caused the downfall of the quality of the national cinematography. In 1990 the independent company "Moscow Suburbs run by Mark Rudinstein organized a film festival with the aim to boost the development of the Russian cinema. This initiative was welcomed by the audience and since 1991 Kinotavr is hosted in Sochi every year.

The Film Festival program is always packed with a wide range of events that can meet everybodys taste: watching festival films, Read Carpet movie-star walks, visiting round tables, press conferences, workshops with film makers and actors.

The films are broadcasted on the big screen under the open starry sky of Sochi until late at night. Everybody can watch it absolutely free of charge; the only thing you should take care of is find an unoccupied seat.

This year the best director award went to Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov for his film "The Student. Just a month ago this director presented his work in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival. The film is scheduled to be released this fall.

The main prize went to Oksana Karas for her comedy "Good Boy. The film is about a schoolboy in a ninth-grade that finds himself in a love triangle.

Ivan Tverdovsky's "Zoology received the Kinotavr's Cinema Critics Award, while its star Natalia Pavlenkova was awarded the Best Actress Honor. The film is a likely contender for Russia's Oscar submission this year. Zoology is about an ordinary woman whose modest life changes completely after she grows a tail. The films international premiere is scheduled to July in Karlovy Vary's main competition.
