Sochi sea port

The Sochi Sea Port is a very famous sight in Sochi. Located on the Black Sea coast it has a direct connection with Georgia, Greece, Turkey and Ukraine. Sochi passenger sea port has 2 zones:

a shallow draught berths. Small non-trading vessels are moored  there, such as private yachts, fishing boats and training vessels.

a berth for large passenger vessels like giant cruise ship that visit Sochi regularly. There is also a cargo port for cargo and merchant vessels mostly coming from Turkey. The sea water never freezes in winter, so the port operates all year round. But severe gales with hurricanes strike the coast almost every winter, causing shipwrecks.

Until 1955, there was neither beautiful building nor a port. Vessels were moored in the estuary of Sochi River. Passengers with their luggage were delivered by boats and had to climb up the rope ladders to get aboard. The sea connection with other cities started back in 1828 and first berth was built in 1872. Since then Sochi berthing facilities were repeatedly destroyed by severe storms.

In the 50s Sochi became a very famous spa-resort in Russia and so the construction of the main Sea port building began. The Soviet architect K.S. Alabyan designed the construction project in monumental classicism style, so much favored by Josef Stalin. In 1955, December 15th Sochi Sea Port celebrated its Opening.

During the World War II dolphins almost died out, since they were fished for food due to sever food insecurity and famine. People say that in the Central City Market the air smellt of dolphin fat, since it was almost the only kind of meat for sale back then.

In front of the Sea Port building there is a fountain with a statue of the Greek sea goddess "Navigation.

 Changes for the Olympics

In 2013 the Port underwent a major reconstruction for the Winter Olympics 2014. New berths are now able to welcome two cruise ships up to 300 meters long at the same time. The new Sochi Yacht Marina with roll on/roll off ship berths was built with a 1,000 meter protective pier and a 200 meter breakwater. This new mooring facilities make Sochi seaport the best port in the Black Sea.
